"IMPRESSIONS"
SEVEN MINUTES
"Impressions" choreographed by Fiona Scruggs reflects on the emotional wells of dissociation and connection; fleeting moments we seek, but miss; subtle conflicts. Inspired by the oil painting, "Blue Lovers" by Marc Chagall, "Impressions" is a study on one's initial reactions when later met with true intentions.
Premiere of "Impressions": April 2023, The Foundry
West Stockbridge, MA
"CHIAROSCURO"
EVENING-LENGTH (34 MINUTES)
“Chiaroscuro” is an evening-length work that draws on art, mannerisms, and narratives of the Baroque.
Through a contemporary lens, this Baroque music and movement study juxtaposes le sacré et le profane, or the sacred and common, with the contrast of light and shadow as defined by chiaroscuro.
Research and inspiration for this performance includes Remedios Varo’s Tailleur pour dames painting, thus exploring the simultaneous dichotomy and harmony between the Baroque and Surrealism.
Embodying the dynamic gestures present in Baroque sculptures and paintings, as well as translating the characteristics of Baroque art and music, such as strong diagonals, swirling action, chiaroscuro, scenes of everyday life, asymmetry, emotion, formal design, and rhythm vitality, are the impetus for the choreography of “Chiaroscuro.”

"QUALIA"
EVENING-LENGTH (25 MINUTES)
FOUR MOVEMENTS: TIME, SPACE, ENERGY & CHAOS
“Qualia” choreographed by Fiona Scruggs is a multi-piece work that illustrates the concept of qualia, which is defined as one’s own individual experience and consciousness. “Qualia” illustrates the cyclical and ephemeral nature of time, space, energy, and chaos and their relationships to our perception of transient experiences. Research for this performance includes Salvador Dali’s The Persistence of Memory (1931), Giorgio De Chirico’s metaphysical paintings, essays and articles expounding on the relationship between time and history, and the artists’ unique personal perceptions of time, space, energy, and chaos.
The "Space" movement draws on the paintings of Giorgio De Chirico and the use of distance, size, and spatial organization in stillness and movement.
The "Time" movement illustrates the cyclical and ephemeral nature of time and its relationship to our perception of transient experiences. Research for this duet included Salvador Dali’s The Persistence of Memory (1931), essays and articles expounding on the relationship between time and history, and the artists’ unique personal perceptions of time.
The "Energy" movement of “Qualia” draws on personal experience to investigate and illustrate the relationship of emotion to energy.
The "Chaos" movement exemplifies the consequence of when the elements of space, time, and energy are out of alignment.
